Rossi, arguably the most prolific motorcycle racer of his time with seven Moto-GP world champion titles, took a spill during a practice session leading to the Italian Grand Prix and was forced to watch the race from his hospital bed. Rossi laid his bike down at 110 miles-per-hour, shattering his shin bone. It took a pin and four screws to reset the fractured tibia. Many who witnessed the accident wondered when, if at all, Rossi would be able to return to the track. Rossi himself admitted fear for his future upon reviewing tape of the accident, somberly reminding himself that crashes like this one often take away more than careers.

Those fans and fellow races who wrote him off for the season received news today that Rossi would in fact be back in action, proving what tough athletes these motorcycle racers truly are. Valentino Rossi’s healing and rehabilitation has stunned even his own doctors who said it would be five months before he could return to the track. Joked Rossi, “…maybe five months to play football, but I just need to ride the bike.”

Leading up to his most recent time trial, Rossi had been practicing on a Yamaha R1 – one of the company’s world superbikes. Rossi admits that his M1 on the track is a completely different thing, but he laments missing his team and his bike, and he’s ready to get on and try. Yamaha has confirmed Rossi will ride for them this weekend at the Germany Grand Prix, but also named an alternate should anything change, Wataru Yoshikawa.

Over the years Rossi has proven his desire to reach the top, with a total of nine titles to his name. But for the first time in his career Rossi has missed several events in a row, and has dropped in the Moto GP points standing from 2nd place before the fateful race in Italy to 7th place going in to this race. Only time will tell if he’s able to pull back up to the front, but for right now, Rossi is just happy to be competing again.
